CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
WHEN BRIAN DROPPED BRONKA OFF in front of her brick bungalow, she almost tripped, so focused was she on Father Stan and Brian who were still on her mind (for very different reasons). But her focus was soon redirected as she suddenly became aware of a car honking. She looked up and saw Irv Rosenâs blue Buick with the New York Press plates. He pulled up in front of her house and got out of the car.
âHello Irv,â Bronka said.
Graying and heavy, Irv had gotten older since he used to drive her and his daughter Christina and her sisters to school. But he still seemed just as friendly.
âYou know, I thought I saw you yesterday at Fatherland Gardens, but there were so many people there and so much going on, I didnât get a chance to say hi. Also, Christina told me that you were doing cooking and lifestyle features for The Dispatch, so I wasnât expecting to see you at such a hot event.â
âIt was a hot event.â Bronka smiled with pride. âMy boss couldnât find anyone else so he finally gave me some real news to cover.â
âWell, good for you. Iâm proud of you. Iâll tell Christina when I call her later. Thatâs just wonderful. You know, if youâre working on the story, I may have an angle for you. I happen to know one of the neo-Nazis lives in this neighborhood. And believe it or not, he works in Brodskyâs Deli. I had a confrontation with him about sixteen years agoâin fact he was at your tenth birthday party.â
âOh, come on, Irv, thatâs nothing to joke about,â she said.
âNo, Bronka, itâs the absolute truth.â
How could this be? Bronka thought to herself. She had never heard this story before. And it had happened at her birthday party.
âNo, really. He delivered the cold cuts to the party for you and JoJo. And Jakob Zilberman, remember Estherâs father, recognized him from Auschwitz. The deli guy was an SS guard when Jakob was a prisoner there. Anyway, itâs a long story. I said hi to Brian yesterday but I donât know if he spotted his dad; he kind of disappeared after I saw him. But Iâd like to speak with Brian if heâs interested in the backstory. Poor kid, heâs such a nice boy. Iâve advised him numerous times when Iâve been in the shop, giving him advice about photography and camera equipment. Tell him to contact me if he wants to chat.â
Bronkaâs face fell and her heart started racing, but all she said was, âSo itâs true.â
The Nazi had delivered the cold cuts. Well, it made sense, he worked in the deli. But why was it never mentioned? Certainly, Irv was such a yenta that the whole block must have known, especially her parents since they hosted the party. You would think in all these years at least Faye would have said something. So, everyone who patronized Brodskyâs had come in contact with a Nazi. She wondered why Irv and Mr.
